The Centre de Recherche Public - Gabriel Lippmann, a fast growing public establishment for applied scientific research and technology transfer in Luxembourg, has an opening on a permanent contract basis for its internationally recognized Department ‘Environment and Agro-biotechnologies’ (EVA) for:
a researcher in microwave remote sensing (m/f)
(Ref : EVA-170212-CHREPAP)
Duties and responsibilities:
The candidate will participate in research projects dealing with the retrieval of hydrology-related variables from active and passive microwave remote sensing data sets. The applicant will develop automated image processing chains for inferring soil moisture, flood extent and water stage from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), scatterometer and radiometer observations. Another objective consists in finding new ways for assessing the propagation of uncertainties in such data processing chains. A special focus is set on validation studies using field measurements, airborne photography and model results from a number of experimental sites across the world. In collaboration with hydrodynamic modellers, the candidate will contribute to the integration of remote sensing observations into coupled hydrological-hydraulic modelling systems.
The results of these research studies are expected to lead to a reduction of the predictive uncertainty of numerical models, thereby supporting operational water resources management. A major objective is to publish projects results in highly ranked scientific journals.
The candidate will join a multi-disciplinary research team including remote sensing scientists, hydrological and hydraulic modellers, as well as experimental hydrologists. The position will involve a high level of interaction with research partners, such as the University of Bristol (UK), Ghent University (B) and UNESCO-IHE (NL), as well as national stakeholders in flood management.
Qualifications:
- Applicants shall have either a PhD degree or a MSc degree with 4 years of professional experience in environmental sciences, preferentially with a special focus on microwave remote sensing technologies,
- Candidates must have a high expertise in microwave remote sensing data processing (i.e. calibration, data resampling, georeferencing, generation of time series of geophysical parameters),
- Research interest shall be focused on the exploitation of spaceborne radars and radiometers for monitoring soil moisture and surface water bodies,
- Several years of experience in the participation in research and development projects are necessary,
- Possessing advance scientific programming skills and being author and/or co-author of scientific journal papers related to environmental sciences,
- The candidate must be fluent in English (scientific exchanges), French (administrative language) will be considered as a real advantage.
